Dogecoin is the Word of the Month
Dogecoin, pronounced "doszhcoin") is a reference in cryptocurrency news and even this newsletter. But what is it exactly?
Dogecoin (DOGE), a peer to-peer, open source altcoin, was founded in 2013 by Jackson Palmer & Billy Markus. Its blockchain is derived from Litecoin, an altcoin. Dogecoin's scrypt algorithm is what makes it unique. Dogecoin is therefore infinitely available, unlike Bitcoin which has a maximum limit of 21 million coins. Inflation in numbers drives down the cost.
Dogecoin was adopted as part of a tipping scheme on Reddit. This system rewards the creation and sharing of quality content in communities that use the currency. You can mine it yourself or buy coins from a Dogecoin faucet. A faucet is a website which gives away small amounts of coins in "drops" each day.
