Germany has announced a new COVID-19 lockdown, but it is only for those who have not been vaccinated against coronavirus. This was announced by outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her successor Olaf Scholz on Thursday.
According to The Telegraph, Merkel stated that only those who have been vaccinated (or recovered) from Covid will be able to enjoy culture and leisure in the country.
The new rules will prohibit those who have not been vaccinated from eating in bars and restaurants, cinemas, gyms, movie theatres, gyms, and non-essential shops.
After meeting with the leaders of 16 of the country's states, Merkel and Scholz announced the news. They also discussed ways to stop the spread of COVID-19.
CNN reported that both the incoming and outgoing chancellors supported mandatory vaccinations. However, this proposal would need to be voted on by parliament.
According to Reuters data, Germany has administered more that 124 million COVID-19 vaccinations. This is enough to have vaccinated approximately 74% of the population.
The new lockdown in Germany comes only two weeks after Austria had announced its own unvaccinated lockdown.
Austrian lockdown allows only essential reasons for unvaccinated persons to leave their homes.
