After internal research revealed that Instagram can cause harm to children, Instagram faced a huge backlash.
Instagram wants to make it easier for you to stop scrolling endlessly on the platform.
CEO Adam Mosseri posted a Tuesday blog posting announcing the rollout of "Take A Break", a feature that asks users to leave the app after a set amount of time. Insider asked Instagram for an estimate of how long it would take.
They will be able to set reminders and receive expert-backed trips. This will help them reset and reflect. Similar messages have been sent by TikTok to its users before.
This new product feature is part of a group of features that are designed to protect young users. Instagram has been subject to a lot of backlash after internal research revealed that the platform could be harmful for teens' mental health.
Instagram has now made it illegal to tag or mention teens who do not follow them. Instagram announced that it will now ban direct messages from teens who don't follow it.
If teens have been focusing on one topic for too long, the platform will "nudge them towards other topics." Critics have condemned Instagram for leading users down rabbit holes through its recommendations algorithm. This could lead young girls to content about eating disorders or anorexia, if they are looking at fitness posts.
Instagram said that it is adding parental controls to the app, such as allowing parents to monitor how long their children spend on the app. The company had been planning to launch a children-centric version Instagram for users younger than 13 years old, but it stopped its plans in September due to backlash.
This blog post was published a day before Mosseri's testimony before a Congressional committee. "Protecting Kids Online: Instagram Reforms and Young Users" will be the hearing's title. It will examine what the company knows about children using its platform.
