New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu roasts former President Donald Trump at a Saturday dinner with Washington A-listers.

Sununu, who is a Republican, spoke at the Gridiron Club dinner. This annual event hasn't been hosted since the pandemic. The dinner is hosted by a respected journalistic organization and attracts politicians from both sides, sometimes including the president.

According to Politico Sununu said that Trump had tweeted "you know, he's probably going be the next president", adding that Trump was "rational" and had "experience" as well as a "sense for integrity."

"Nah, I'm just kidding! He's crazy! Sununu continued, causing laughter from the crowd.

"The media often asks me if Donald Trump is insane. I will say it this way: He isn't so insane that you can put him in a mental facility. He wouldn't get out of a mental institution if he was. According to Politico, Sununu stated the following.

Insider reached Trump's office but did not receive a response immediately.

The dinner was attended by only two Republican senators, Trump speaking at it in 2018. No Republicans were present, according to The Washington Post.

Jake Lahut, Insider's reporter, reported that Corey Lewandowski, a former Trump campaign manager, claimed Trump had assigned him a task to oust Sununu. Lewandowski stated that Trump was unhappy with the governor and wasn't loyal to him.

Sununu said that he does not need any endorsement to be reelected.
