Editor’s note, November 24, 2009: The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that a story about a German shepherd buying a Miami mansion was the result a publicity stunt to mislead journalists.
The AP previously reported that Gunther VI, the dog being sold, had been once owned by Madonna, the pop singer. Insider published a story based upon this AP report. However, on Wednesday the AP changed its original story to include a piece about Gunther's "ruse".
According to the AP, the Gunther Corp. owned the mansion, but no dog was involved in the business. The AP reported that claims that Gunther VI was part a long line that inherited wealth from a German countess are a joke.
Insider has left the original copy below for transparency.
According to the Associated Press, Gunther VI, a German shepherd selling a Miami home that belonged to Madonna is being sold.
Wednesday's sale of the 1.2-acre waterfront property was marked by a asking price of $31.75million. This is a significant increase from 2000, when Madonna sold it to Gunther's trust for $7.5 million.
According to the AP, handlers of the estate claimed that the dog's wealth can be traced back at Gunter III, his ancestor. According to the AP, Gunther III inherited millions from Karlotta Liebenstein (a German countess who passed away in 1992),
The AP reported that handlers have taken care of the dog's bloodline since then.
According to the AP, Gunther VI's trust has a value of almost $500 million.
According to the listing on the real estate agent's website, the dog's house overlooks Biscayne Bay. It has nine bedrooms, eight-and-a-half bathrooms and a swimming pool. According to the listing, this property is one of six waterfront properties and is just minutes from Miami Beach.
Ruthie Assouline (real-estate agent) and her husband Ethan Assouline told the AP that "he lives in Madonna’s former master bedroom."
Insider reached Ruthie Assouline but she did not immediately reply to our request for comment.
Carla Riccitelli was one of Gunther’s caretakers. She told the AP she is part of a trust board. According to the AP, the board decides when the trust can buy or sell real estate.
The German shepherd lives in Tuscany and joins the real-estate agents in meetings. He also travels by private jets. Riccitelli said that he also enjoys meals prepared by a chef.
